About EditZap
Free PDF and image tools that do the work on your own device, not on someone else's server.
What EditZap is
EditZap is a collection of free tools for everyday file jobs: merging and splitting PDFs, compressing and converting them, signing and password-protecting documents, resizing and cropping photos, reading text out of images, removing backgrounds and making QR codes. There is no account to create, no watermark stamped on your results and no daily limit.
What makes it different is where the work happens. Every tool runs inside your web browser, on your own computer or phone, so the files you open are never uploaded anywhere.
Why everything runs in your browser
Most online file tools work by uploading your document to their servers, processing it there and sending the result back. That means a copy of your contract, ID scan, payslip or family photo sits, at least for a while, on a computer you know nothing about, under a retention policy you probably haven't read.
EditZap was built the other way round. If the file never leaves your device, there is nothing to leak, nothing to retain and nothing to trust us with. It is also often quicker: with no upload and no download queue, a large file is processed at the full speed of your own device.
How it works, in plain terms
When you open a tool, your browser downloads the page along with the program code that does the job, the same way it downloads any web page. From then on, all the work happens inside that browser tab, using your device's processor and memory. Modern browsers can run serious software this way, including complete PDF engines, image encoders and even small AI models, thanks to technologies such as WebAssembly and WebGPU.
When you drop a file in, it is opened locally, processed in memory, and the result is saved through your browser's normal download. Your file is not stored anywhere else, and once you close the tab it is gone from the page's memory.
A few heavier tools fetch extra data the first time you use them: the text-recognition data for Image to Text and the AI model for Remove Background. These are downloaded to your device and kept in your browser's cache. Nothing goes the other way. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools: the Network tab shows code and data coming in, but never your file going out. The privacy policy lists every server your browser contacts.

Honest limitations
Doing everything on your device has real advantages, and a few trade-offs worth knowing about:
- Your device sets the pace. Speed and the largest file you can handle depend on your device's processor and memory. Very large files on an older phone can run out of memory; splitting the job into smaller batches usually helps.
- You need a connection to start. Opening a tool needs the internet, and some tools fetch components at the moment you use them (the PDF engine, the OCR data, the AI model). Do not count on them working offline.
- Conversions are not perfect copies. PDF to Word extracts the text rather than cloning the layout. Word to PDF uses a lightweight converter rather than Word's own layout engine, so complex page designs can shift. Word to PDF, Excel to PDF and Compress PDF draw pages as images, so the text in the result cannot be selected or searched.
- Recognition is only as good as the input. OCR struggles with blurry photos and handwriting, and the background remover can miss fine details such as stray hair.
- Signatures are drawn, not certified. Sign PDF places an image of your signature on the page. It is not a cryptographic digital signature.
- Passwords must be known. Unlock PDF only removes a password you already know. It cannot crack or bypass one.
Each tool's page explains its own limits in more detail. Always check the result before you send it on, and keep your original file.
An independent project
EditZap is a small independent project. It is not affiliated with Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, Google or any other software company, and product names such as Word, Excel and iPhone are used only to describe which files the tools work with. The tools are built on respected open-source libraries, which we are grateful for.
EditZap is free to use. Because there are no servers processing files, running costs are low. In the future the site may show ads to cover them. If that happens, the tools will stay free, your files will still be processed on your device, and the privacy policy will be updated first.
