How to rotate or flip a photo

1. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP onto the box above; a live preview appears underneath it.
2. Use Rotate left or Rotate right to turn the picture in 90° steps, and Flip horizontal or Flip vertical to mirror it.
3. The steps stack on one another, so two taps of rotate right give you 180°, and a rotation can be combined with a mirror. Reset returns the picture to how it started.
4. When the preview looks right, press Download Rotated Image and the file is saved as yourfile-rotated.jpg.

What people use it for

Orientation problems tend to surface at the worst moment — when a photo is already inside a document, a listing or a message.

• Turning a document photographed sideways the right way up before it is read or printed.
• Fixing a phone picture that a website or an older program insists on showing rotated by 90°.
• Mirroring a selfie or a webcam capture so that text in the shot reads the correct way round.
• Flipping a scanned drawing or a logo horizontally to face the other way in a layout.

Good to know

Rotation here is limited to quarter turns. There is no free-angle slider and no automatic straightening of a tilted horizon, because an arbitrary angle would mean either cutting the corners off or padding them with blank space. Quarter turns and mirrors, by contrast, are exact: every pixel simply lands in a new position. The preview on screen is scaled down to fit, but the download is rendered from the original file at its native resolution, with the width and height swapping over for 90° and 270°.

One honest caveat about JPGs. Saving re-encodes the picture, and every JPG re-encode discards a small amount of detail — invisible once, but gradually noticeable if you keep rotating and saving the same file over and over. Do the transform in one pass on the original rather than in several rounds. PNG and WebP files keep their format on the way out, and PNG transparency survives. There is no upload step at any point: the file is read locally, redrawn on a canvas by your browser and offered back as a download. Questions people ask

Can I rotate by an angle other than 90°?

Not with this tool. It does 90° steps plus horizontal and vertical mirroring, which covers the great majority of orientation fixes.

Does the picture lose quality when it is rotated?

Nothing is resampled by the rotation itself, but re-saving a JPG always costs a little quality. Rotate the original once and you will not see a difference.

Why does my photo already look rotated before I touch anything?

Cameras record an orientation tag alongside the pixels, and different programs honour it differently. The preview shows how your browser reads the file, and the download matches that preview.

Can I rotate several photos in one go?

No — one image at a time, since each usually needs a different correction and the live preview is what tells you when it is right.
