How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Add your .webp files by dropping them on the box above or clicking it to browse. One image is fine, and so is a whole folder selected in one go.
  2. Leave JPG quality at 90 unless you have a reason to change it. Lower numbers give lighter files; above about 95 the files grow quickly for very little visible gain.
  3. If any of the images have see-through areas, such as a logo or a product cut-out, choose the colour that should fill them. JPG cannot store transparency, so something has to sit behind the picture, and white suits most documents and web forms.
  4. Press Convert to JPG. A single image downloads as a .jpg under its original name; several arrive together in editzap-webp-to-jpg.zip.

What people use it for

Most WebP files people end up with were never chosen on purpose. Websites serve their pictures as WebP because the files are small, so "Save image as" hands you a .webp even when the page seemed to show an ordinary photo. The trouble starts when that file has to go somewhere else.

Good to know

Expect the JPG to be larger than the WebP it came from, often noticeably so. WebP simply compresses more efficiently, and a JPG at quality 90 needs more bytes to look the same; the page shows both totals when it finishes. If the size matters, lower the quality a little or pass the results through Compress Image. Animated WebP files become a still picture of their first frame, because a JPG holds one image only. Colour profiles and camera details stored inside the WebP are not carried across, and an image too large for your browser to draw is scaled down to fit, with the status line naming it.

The conversion is done by your own browser, which already knows how to read WebP: the page takes the file from your disk, redraws it and writes a JPG, and no part of the picture travels over the network. You can check this for yourself by going offline once the page has loaded — converting still works, because there is nothing to send.

Questions people ask

Why did an image I saved from a website turn out to be WebP?

Many sites convert their pictures to WebP automatically, whatever format they were uploaded in, because smaller files make pages load faster. Your browser displays it without complaint, so the format only becomes visible once the file is on your computer and another program has to open it.

Does converting to JPG lose quality?

A little, since JPG is a lossy format and the WebP was usually lossy too. At quality 90 the difference is very hard to spot. What conversion cannot do is bring back detail the WebP had already discarded.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

They are filled with the colour you picked, white unless you change it, and the status line lists the images where that happened. If the transparency needs to survive, convert to PNG with WebP to PNG instead.

I have JPG and PNG files too. Can I add them here?

This page takes WebP only, so it can stay focused on one job and its settings suit it. For changing JPG, PNG and WebP files into one another in any direction, use Convert Image.
